Chapter 6

It was a beautiful day to jettison his future. Seth sat on a giant boulder outside the Java Cup, staring out at the lake, nursing a Megan, a specialty chocolate and caramel coffee named after a local. It had rained in the night, turning the air soggy, and the water was high and frothy, the waves leaving foam across the rocky shore.

The air smelled of fall—the loamy earth, the decaying leaves, the hint of winter. He couldn’t wait to build a fire in his fireplace and snuggle with Ree on the sofa.

Could a man fall in love in five days? When he knew the girl his entire life, maybe. When his heart was ready.

When he’d been thinking about loving her for a while.

When it was Ree Zimmerman.

Seth couldn’t believe it, but he was almost thankful that Amelia had dumped him. Okay, definitely thankful. He’d grown into the man he’d wanted to be trying to sear her out of his heart. Learned how to build a house, how to jump fire. He’d even helped bring down a terrorist cult somewhere back in his past.

He was ready for the next chapter.

“Seth!” The voice carried in the breeze and Seth turned to see fellow smoke jumper Romeo Christiansen walking across the beach. He carried a bag from World’s Best Donuts, his face tan, wearing a canvas jacket and his trusty steel-toed fire boots.

Seth got up. “Hope one of those donuts is for me.”

“A raised glazed. I know who’s boss.” The son of Ingrid Christiansen’s sister, Romeo had dark hair and a dark complexion. He’d lived with Ingrid and John a few years back and called Deep Haven his home, and although he had a different last name, no one remembered it. Instead, he’d taken on the Christiansen moniker.

Seth laughed at his words, took the glazed donut and ignored the lump in his throat. Yeah, this wouldn’t be easy.

He’d miss the guys. The camaraderie. A few years ago, he and Romeo had even survived a crazy fire and a jailbreak of some inmate hotshots in Alaska. So, he met Romeo’s handshake and pulled him in for a quick hug.

Romeo didn’t give him a thump. “How’s the burn?”

“Healing.” In fact, he hadn’t really thought about it for a few days, although every morning, his body ached with the tightening flesh. He’d been lucky it wasn’t worse—he’d been wearing his Nomex shirt and a helmet, although it was a good lesson to keep his jacket on. “How’s Jed?”

“Doc says that he’s improving. He’s walking, but he’ll never jump again. Two broken vertebrae will do that.”

“Could have been worse.”

“For both of you. What were you thinking, man?” Romeo sat on a nearby boulder.

“I was thinking I didn’t want my boss to die,” Seth said, taking a bite of the donut.

“By pushing him out of the way of a snag and nearly getting killed yourself?”

“He would have been crushed. A second-degree burn is hardly a cost to save a guy’s life.”

“Yeah. Which is why the guys want you back, and soon.
